This automatic book line allows casing-in of book blocks with square or round back, also of very large sizes, in small and medium runs. It can be installed in-line with a digital book printing and book block preparation line, or as an independent unit.
The line offered consists of:
- Book infeed channel, which can be linked to the machines before
- Casing-in station with automatic non-stop cover feeder
- Gluing station (PVA glue) and cover pressing unit
- Delivery and laydown system with conveyor to book press
- Book pressing and joint forming station
Smyth Semi-Automatic Casing In Machine
The Smyth semi-automatic casing-in machine is offered in (2) formats – standard size and large size. The machine is operator friendly and easy to operate offering high precision and efficient production. This machine is ideal for on-demand book manufacturers, sample books, thin books as well as short to medium production runs. The machine has a casing station with cover guides which holds the book cover in place. The book block is feed through the front of the machine on a fixed wing which has a push system that takes the book block to a moving wing, which transports it though the gluing station. The glued book block is automatically inserted into the book cover and then the operator removes the finished hardcover book. A foot pedal activates the production cycle, which allows the operator to keep both hands free. The guides on the machine allows for precise placement of the block into the book cover ensuring high quality results. The glue tank offers simple and easy clean-up.

SMYTH® AUTOMATIC HARD COVER BOOK CASING-IN AND PRESSING LINE
Smyth Automatic Tipping Machine
Designed for outside tipping of endpapers, sheets, signatures and cards. It offers compact design, simple operation, quick make-ready and accurate registering.
Piles of endsheets and signatures are loaded separately in two vertical hoppers. The bottom signature is extracted by a gripper and laid on a transport chain.
The signature passes under a gluing device which applies a line of glue along the spine. An endsheet is fed from the second hopper and accurately aligned over the signature. Two pairs of rollers rub the glue down uniformly along the spine. The finished product comes out in a shingle on a horizontal delivery table.
- The loading and delivery stations are situated at the same side of the machine for comfortable operation.
- During extraction from the hopper, a sucker bar reliably separates the bottom signature/endsheet from the rest of the pile.
- A micrometer adjustment allows tipping up to 5mm away from the spine.
- Two pairs of adjustable-pressure rub-down rollers for uniform glue distribution. The rollers are provided with two easy to clean stainless rings.
- The machine stops automatically in case of a misfeed
Smyth Automatic Perfect Binder, Backing, Lining and Endpaper Machine
Our small perfect binder for the process of applying backing, gauze and endpapers automatically to Smyth sewn book block. Automatically applies in one pass two endpapers and the lining material to a book block for hard cover Smyth bookbinding. The endpapers are pre-gathered with the book blocks. The side-gluing nozzles apply glue on both sided with a double line so that both the book block and the outside face of the endpapers are glued to the book and ready for the application of the lining strip which has been positioned by means of a special guide onto the cover feeding station. After the spine and side pressure is applied the operator can remove the book block.
Smyth Book Press Machine
The machine performs the following two processes separately and contemporary:
- Hydraulic pressing of the entire book;
- Forming two perfect and permanent channels with heat blades at the ridge of the book near the spine
Hydraulic pressing process is to eliminate the residues air between the flyleaf and the book case. Groove pressing process is to make a shape of about 3 mm wide at the position connecting the front and the back cover and the ridge. This is to make the book block free of deformations and easy to read, and it also helps to make the appearance of the book more beautiful.
Single book or photo-book or photo-album, after casing-in, is manually entered into the machine in a vertical position with the spine down. The spine of the book rests on a bar actuated by a pneumatic cylinder that carries the book down in the correct position and always the same for all the books. The hydraulic circuit starts and the book is clamped between two plates and pressed for an adjustable period of time, as adjustable is the operating pressure of the hydraulic system.
At the same time pneumatic cylinders actuate heated blades that form the groove in the desired position near the spine of the book.

Smyth Semi-automatic Casemaker
Gluing and turning-in machine to produce hardcovers for books, photo-books or photo-album.
Composed by four distinct units and grouped into a single compact production system:
- Corner cutting unit, for the preparation of the material to be glued. It can cut the corners of the paper with 45 degrees fixed angle and it can cut the cardboard roll to produce the spines.
- Gluing unit that can use hot and cold glue. Special rollers allow spreading the glue evenly on the paper. Equipped with a resistor for heating the glue, connected to a digital controller for setting the temperature.
- Cardboard feeder unit, where the three pieces that form standard cover are positioned up to 30 cm maximum height of the stack. Through special suckers the cartons are taken from the feeder and positioned on the pasted material at perfect register.
- Turning and pressing unit, driven by a brushless motor and programmed with a touch-screen panel. After coupling the material is pushed into special rubber rollers for automatic turning-in, getting covers perfectly tucked.
- Choose one-piece covers, three-piece covers (standard version), four-pieces and five-pieces covers (on demand)
An optional version is suitable for short runs, does not have the cardboard feeder, but is equipped with a special device for manual positioning of the cardboards, particular guides allow to position the material easily and perfectly.
Smyth Semi-Automatic Cardboard Cutting Machine
Designed to automatically cut the cardboard spines for the cases of hardcover books.
The cardboard is fed by hand to the cutting system which is composed of double blade to avoid pinching the cardboard when cutting.
